Our Story

Wally Aziz, the founder who used to be a French speaking tour guide, working on the big Nile cruises, was inspired by the watercolors paintings of David Roberts reflecting the elegance of Egypt in the 19th Century. So, he decided to build a real Dahabieh named ‘Lazuli’ (a suited name to the blue color palettes of the Nile), inviting his guests to discover the great Nile River with all its Historical treasures and wonderful landscapes, living an unforgettable voyage and leaving real footprints behind them. For its small sized, elegant and comfortable authentic cabins, the Dahabieh is the ideal houseboat to experience the Nile and its inhabitants, discover the villages, and to spend a night in front of a forgotten temple as did past travelers.

Lazuli started sailing its first cruise of charm in 2001 along the river Nile on a magical historical trip. The Dahabieh is a sailing houseboat, that originally comes from “Dahab”; meaning gold but also the sacred boat on which the god Amon navigated from the Karnak temple to Luxor during big celebrations. Then in the 19th Century the Dahabiehs were used by Pashas, rich merchants and later on travelers seeking to explore the biggest archaeological sites of the Nile Valley.

Dinning Experience
Enjoy a dining experience like no other to dine candle-lit surrounded by the starry sky just like they used to do in the XIX century. The crew will light lanterns decorating the shore that will lead you to the dinner by the Nile

Village's Visits
Lazuli takes you on a memorable discovery of the small villages on the banks of the Nile that are usually deserted by large Nile cruises trips; palm groves, gardens and markets, meeting the local inhabitants.

Cultural Exchange
Our travelers experience the local Egyptian way of life, sharing with the inhabitants their daily activities such as 'traditional fishing' and the baking of sun bread as well as exchanging coloring books and colors with the children, synonymous with learning, exchanges and knowledge.

Contributing to the Environment
As a contribution to the environment, Lazuli Dahabiehs work with solar system and we are keen on protecting the environment by giving awareness to children of the villages on how to preserve the wellness and cleanness of their lives along the borders of the Nile.
